Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In Nigeria, women have increasingly been involved in electoral processes, not only as voters but also in mediation and conflict resolution roles during and after elections. Katsina Local Government in Katsina State is a prime example where women have played pivotal roles in resolving electoral disputes, fostering peace, and ensuring a fair process. Despite cultural barriers, women's participation in electoral conflict resolution has been recognized as essential in maintaining the integrity of the electoral system (Ahmed & Dikko, 2024). This study seeks to investigate the specific roles women have played in mitigating electoral conflicts in Katsina Local Government, highlighting their strategies, challenges, and successes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral conflict remains a significant issue in Nigerian politics, with violence, disputes over results, and electoral malpractices undermining the credibility of elections. In Katsina Local Government, there have been increasing calls for the inclusion of women in conflict resolution roles, yet the extent and effectiveness of their involvement remains under-researched. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how women’s involvement in electoral conflict resolution can influence the peacebuilding process and election outcomes in the region (Abubakar & Yakubu, 2023).
